'Jungle Drum' is the third single released from Emilíana Torrini's third album Me and Armini. It was released as a digital download on March 9, 2009^[2] and later on June 19, 2009^[3][4] as a CD single (in Germany only).^[1]

Critical reception[edit]

Critics received the song very warmly; Popmatters' reviewer Spencer Tricker called 'Jungle Drum' the 'catchiest tune' on the album (alongside 'Big Jumps'), 'every bit as good as the singles from Fisherman's Woman'.^[7] He also praised the song for boasting 'an irresistible chorus that features some totally unexpected scatting'.^[7] Matthew Allard from ARTISTdirect stated the song 'should be an iPhone ad'.^[8] Clickmusic reviewer Francis Jolley called the song 'a sprightly, fun little gem, reminiscent of Nancy Sinatra in her heyday' and 'infectious Scandinavian pop'.^[9] Both Popmatters and Clickmusic reviews praised the song's rhythm section calling it impossible 'to not foot tap along' to.^[7][9]

Appearances in media[edit]

In 2009 it also appeared in the Germany's Next Topmodel TV show.^[10] Thus, the song became very popular in German-speaking countries. It was planned to appear in dance videogame Just Dance 3, but was cut for unknown reasons.^[10][11]

In 2010 the track was used as a theme song in a video made for the Government of Iceland's official campaign 'Inspired by Iceland' to lure tourists to visit Iceland.^[12]

Chart positions[edit]

The song debuted on the German Singles Chart at number 12 and peaked at number one on its fourth week, where it stayed for eight consecutive weeks. It stayed on that chart for a total of 35 weeks.^[13] The song also reached number one in Austria, Belgium and Iceland. The song also charted at number 84 in the Australian ARIA Singles Charts. 'Jungle' is a song by Australian singer Emma Louise, which was released on March 31, 2011. It was included in her debut EP Full Hearts & Empty Rooms from the same year. The song gained international success with a remix by GermanDJWankelmut in 2013. Emma Louise's solo version has charted in its own right in a number of countries, most notably peaking number 3 on the French Singles Chart. After the success of the Wankelmut remix, Emma Louise included both versions in her 2013 studio album vs Head vs Heart. A final official remix was made by MK in late 2013.

The song was used in Season 1 Episode 9 of Australian prison drama Wentworth. It was also used in Season 8 Episode 2 of Grey's Anatomy.

Wankelmut remix: My Head Is a Jungle[edit]

German producer Wankelmut made a remix of the song, releasing it under the title 'My Head Is a Jungle' in 2013. It was released through German label Poesie Musik, a sublabel of Get Physical Music. The remix single charted across Europe, having the most success in Italy and the United Kingdom, where it reached number 5. A remix by MK not released on the original press received airplay in mid-2014, and is more popular by YouTube views than the original.^[1]

Music video[edit]

In the music video for 'Jungle', Emma Louise sings the song stuck in a dark room with light bulbs hanging from the ceiling. In between cutouts, she is there reading a book and opening a suitcase in the attic. The length of the video is 3 minutes and 23 seconds. An edit of the same video was made for the Wankelmut remix at a length of 3 minutes and 33 seconds.
